Google app 10.41 preps device notifications in Ambient Mode, Alarms in At A Glance [APK Insight]

Google app 10.41 preps device notifications in Ambient Mode, Alarms in At A Glance [APK Insight]

About APK Insight: In this ‘APK Insight’ post, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we’re able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We’ll try to enable those that are closer to being finished, however, to show you how they’ll look in the case that they do ship. With that in mind, read on.

Notifications in Ambient Mode

A more feature-rich Assistant is coming to the always-on display with Ambient Mode. Besides suggestions and music controls, Google app 10.41 suggests that regular device notifications will appear. New strings detail that functionality, and enabling the notification access permission for the Google app.
<string name=”charging_mode_notification_cta”>Turn on in Settings</string>
<string name=”charging_mode_notification_title”>See your notifications while in Ambient Mode</string>
<string name=”charging_mode_notification_content”>Turn on notification access for the Google App to see your notifications while in Ambient Mode.</string>
Meanwhile, we enabled the settings page to turn on/off Ambient Mode. It will be a preference under “Personalization,” alongside “Personal Results,” “Lock screen personal results,” and “Personal suggestions before you ask.” The Pixel Stand’s existing Photo frame feature will also be accessible here.
We can also see the “Show Ambient Mode when kickstand is open” option that we first spotted earlier this week. It could imply that a first-party Pixel 4 phone case with kickstand is coming.

At A Glance

In addition to Calendar events, Upcoming flight information, and Traffic information, the At A Glance widget available in the Pixel Launcher and Google app might soon note your next upcoming alarm.
<string name=”smartspace_alarm_title”>Alarm</string>
<string name=”smartspace_alarm_summary”>Next upcoming alarm alerts</stril,,

Google app browser

Google Discover and Search today leverage a Chrome Custom Tab that adds an “Add to collection” shortcut in the app bar. Google looks to be working on a separate “Google app browser” that allows users to clear cookies, cached data, and other browsing data separately from Chrome. It’s not clear how the experience would differ.

How to update?

You can sign-up for the Google app’s beta program here or by heading to the Play Store listing on Android and scrolling to the bottom. The latest beta version of the Google app is immediately rolled out when it’s available.
Thanks to JEB Decompiler, which some APK Insight teardowns benefit from.

The Galaxy Note 10 gets rid of the Bixby Key button, finally

The Galaxy Note 10 gets rid of the Bixby Key button, finally

The Galaxy Note 10 doesn't have a hardware button for Bixby, Samsung's AI smart assistant. The reveal came during the Samsung Unpacked event on Wednesday. Bixby debuted on the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus in 2017 and was an attempt to answer Apple's Siri on the iPhone, the Google Assistant is on pretty much any Android phone and Amazon'sAlexa. Fine, but the biggest issue with Bixby has to do with the placement of a dedicated hardware button that triggered the assistant. Frequently when grabbing a Galaxy phone, it was easy to accidentally press the Bixby key and activate the assistant when you didn't want to.
Samsung also did away with the headphone jack on the new Note and there will no doubt be people mourning its loss. However, news that the Note 10 will lack the Bixby Key might actually spur figurative celebrations and parties. Remember, it wasn't until earlier this year that Samsung officially allowed people to remap the Bixby button to trigger another task or change Bixby's activation from a single press to a double one. These compromises made the "accidental press" go away, but the physical button now seemed to lack a purpose.

Google Warning: Tens Of Millions Of Android Phones Come Preloaded With Dangerous Malware Zak Doffman

Google Warning: Tens Of Millions Of Android Phones Come Preloaded With Dangerous Malware Zak Doffman

te about security and surveillance.

Millions of shiny new Android smartphones are being purchased with dangerous malware factory-installed, according to Google’s own security research team. There have been multiple headlines about the millions of harmful apps being installed from the Play Store, but this is something new. And the danger to unsuspecting users, trusting that new boxed devices are safe and clean, is that some of that preinstalled malware can download other malware in the background, commit ad fraud, or even take over its host device.

Android is a thriving open-source community, which is great for innovation but not so great when threat actors seize the opportunity to hide malware in basic software loads that come on boxed devices. New phones can have as many as 400 apps factory-installed, many of which we just ignore. But it transpires that many of those apps have not been vetted. The apps themselves will work as billed, providing a useful capability or service, so we can be forgiven for not considering the risk that might lurk within.
Google’s Maddie Stone, a security researcher with the company’s Project Zero, shared her team’s findings at Black Hat on Thursday. “If malware or security issues come as preinstalled apps,” she warned, “then the damage it can do is greater, and that’s why we need so much reviewing, auditing and analysis.”

The risk impacts Android’s Open-Source Project (AOSP), a lower-cost alternative to the full-fat version. AOSP is installed on lower-cost smartphones where cheaper software alternatives help keep prices down. This means owners of Android-badged devices from the likes of Samsung and Google itself are safe from this particular risk.
For an attacker, Stone warned, the benefit of supply chain compromise is that they “only have to convince one company to include their app, rather than thousands of users.” The Google team didn’t disclose any details of the brands of phones involved, but more than 200 device manufacturers fell foul of the testing, with malware allowing the devices to be attacked remotely.

Of particular concern were two particularly virulent malware campaigns: Chamois and Triada. Chamois generates various flavors of ad fraud, installs background apps, downloads plugins and can even send premium rate text messages. Chamois alone was found to have come installed on 7.4 million devices. Triada is an older variant of malware, one that also displays ads and installs apps.
Google is working to help device manufacturers screen for such vulnerabilities, and between March 2018 and March 2019, Stone claims such screening helped reduce the instances of devices infected by Chamois from 7.4 million to “only” 700,000. “The Android ecosystem is vast,” she warned, “with a diversity of OEMs and customizations—if you are able to infiltrate the supply chain out of the box, then you already have as many infected users as how many devices they sell—that’s why it’s a scarier prospect.”
In the meantime, the usual advice applies around downloading and installing apps from the Play Store. A healthy dose of skepticism does not go amiss when the app is from an unknown source. Not much users can do if those threats come preinstalled, though, and that’s why this revelation is so dangerous. For this one we need to rely on manufacturers to do the right thing and follow Google’s advice in screening software fully to eradicate such risks.

GALAXY NOTE 10: SAMSUNG EXPLAINS WHY THE HEADPHONE JACK IS GONE

GALAXY NOTE 10: SAMSUNG EXPLAINS WHY THE HEADPHONE JACK IS GONE

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ were all freshly presented by their manufacturer. On stage, the representatives of the South Korean brand have obviously focused on the design, performance and many features of both smartphones, but the disappearance of the 3.5 mm jack on these new products was not mentioned.

However, behind the scenes, a Samsungspokesperson agreed to answer The Verge on this issue. As expected, the latter says that removing this connector allows making room for a wider battery. Note that the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ respectively have 3500 and 4300 mAh – against 3400 and 4100 for the S10 and S10 +.
In addition, the manager added that this removal grants better haptic feedback. Because there is more hollow space at the place of the jack. Note, however, that there is always a cavity to accommodate the S Pen.

Now, it will be necessary to see if the users most attached to the jack will be convinced or not by these few arguments. Remember that Samsung has long been a defender of this connection and even made fun of Apple and its dongles. But the leader of the mobile phone has gradually succumbed in turn to market trends.
Feel free to read our article that contains all the details of the two Galaxy Note 10. Remember that pre-orders have started while sales are scheduled for August 23rd.
